Ryan & Ryan Insurance Brokers, Inc. Acquires Reis Turck Associates

Two of Kingston's Best Known Names in Insurance Join Forces
Serving Micro Business - Major Part of County Commercial Landscape

KINGSTON, NY, Jan. 3 -- Two names long associated with insurance in the Kingston area have joined forces. Ryan & Ryan Insurance Brokers, Inc. today announced it has acquired Reis Turck Associates' insurance portfolio.

Donald J. Reis, principal of the Reis Turck  agency on Maiden Lane, moves to the agency that Robert J. Ryan, Jr. opened two years ago this month on Stockade Drive.

This acquisition, the second since Ryan & Ryan opened on Jan. 1, 2009, increases the firm's annual sales by 25 percent, with an insurance portfolio that now covers over 1,100 clients. With the acquisition, Ryan & Ryan also adds Preferred Mutual of New Berlin, NY to its roster of 13 premier insurers.

"With this portfolio of underwriters, our firm retains its focus as being a go-to resource for health, life, auto, home and business insurance, particularly for individually-owned small and medium-sized businesses and individuals," said Robert J. Ryan, Jr., president.

While he was honored as 2009 "Rookie of the Year" by Erie Insurance (NASDQ:ERIE) "in recognition of Ryan & Ryan as a start-up company, the fact is we have a long-established track record in the insurance field," Ryan explained.

In 1985, he joined his father's firm, Robert J. Ryan, Inc., an insurance brokerage that became ranked as the second largest in Ulster County. That business was sold to Ulster Savings Bank in 2000 and continues as Ulster Insurance Services, Inc.

The Reis name became prominent with the growth of the firm founded by Frank Reis.  Donald J. Reis joined his cousin's firm in 1981, leaving in 1992 to establish his own agency that purchased the Turck agency a year later and was renamed Reis Turck Associates.

With Don Reis and his associate Ann Dippel, a customer service representative, coming aboard, Ryan & Ryan begins 2011 with the equivalent of nine full-time employees.

"Ryan & Ryan specializes in serving micro businesses. They are a major segment of Ulster County's commercial landscape, but are underserved by insurance agents and brokers," said Ryan. "Their needs are a bit more complex than those of an individual consumer and their policies are a bit smaller than those of more established businesses."

"The result? They don't fit mass marketing that addresses consumers nor are they big enough to merit customized attention. They are an insurance agent's afterthought. This is our focus, and it's working well for us and our clients," says Ryan whose top-line business will close this year two times higher than in 2009.

"I have a saying: We're one source you can turn to and one call to make for all your insurance needs. That means a lot and really helps a small business with many policies to attend to," said Ryan.
